- Lecture: Avian Anesthesia Avian anesthesia presents many challenges not encountered in small animal anesthesia due to the many different anatomical and physiologic adaptations birds possess. Anesthetic monitoring of the avian patient requires an understanding of these anatomical and physiological differences to allow recognition of the subtle changes that will determine the outcome for a given procedure. The purpose of the lecture is to review the basic anatomy of the avian cardiovascular and respiratory systems and to discuss anesthetic techniques and analgesia in the avian patient.
